2011 State Games of North Carolina

United falls to Summershill in Bronze Medal match at State Games
Bermuda Run –  United hoped to repeat as gold medalists at the State Games of North Carolina but it was not meant to be.  Having not played a meaningful soccer match since last year, and playing a year up in the tournament, United was overmatched when it faced the West Iredell Eagles Saturday morning and then the North Carolina State Champion Troutman Tornadoes.  Against the Tornadoes, the game turned when United, trailing 2-0, had a Derrick Johnson rifle shot hit off the crossbar and bounce straight down on the goal line and bounce out.  Troutman scored on the next play but United answered before halftime when Andrew McClain crossed the ball to Raphael Kim to drive home a goal, the first that Troutman had given up since the first game of the Wrangler/McDonald’s tournament almost a month ago.  Troutman had other chances, but Brock Waters was fantastic in goal, taking away several breakaways, while the United defense, led by Jake Powell, Zach Gault, Brendan Boyd, Stephen Pratt and Chris Brown, kept Troutman off balance with an offside trap.

United faced the Summershill United Sunday morning and then again Sunday afternoon in the bronze medal game.  The only thing that separated these two teams was a three-minute span at the start of the second game when Summershill scored their only goal.  The other 137 minutes that the two teams played were scoreless although United had chances.  The closest the team came was when McClean crossed to the far post and just missed the outstretched leg of Colin Attarian.  Nicholas McCullers had a chance later in the half that fell short.

“Kinda’ cool.” Almost one year to the day since United left the outdoor game it was back outside in 3-1 friendly win over the CASL Rangers. “This is like old United,” Colin Attarian said when subbing out. Zach Gault added “This is kinda cool.” In the picture, Nicholas McCullers battles fort the ball in front of the Rangers net on a night where Jake Powell, Chris Brown and Derrick Johnson scored. United travels to the State Games this weekend.
